ORIGINAL SAFARI GAME · PROGRESSIVE JACKPOT GUIDE · 18+
Mega Moolah review for New Zealand players
Mega Moolah combines a straightforward safari-themed reel game with a separate progressive jackpot wheel. The lion Wild, monkey Scatters and Free Spins affect ordinary play; the Mini, Minor, Major and Mega pools are a different part of the experience.
This review covers the original title, explains the distinction between those prizes and checks the rules behind common jackpot claims. It does not present a changing meter as a current guaranteed payout.
The original Mega Moolah
The familiar version has an African safari backdrop, five reels, three rows and 25 paylines. It was released under the Microgaming brand and appears in current Games Global operator catalogues. The linked classic rules identify the lion, monkey and separate jackpot feature discussed here.

| Detail | What to know |
|---|---|
| Provider names | Microgaming in older references; Games Global in current operator listings. |
| Reel grid | Five reels and three rows. |
| Paylines | 25 in the classic reference; read the controls in your client. |
| Wild | Lion, with a doubling effect on combinations it completes. |
| Scatter | Monkey, used for scatter awards and Free Spins. |
| Jackpot system | Four progressive tiers awarded through a separate wheel. |
| NZ availability | Not verified in every featured casino’s lobby. |
Our assessment
The base game is easy to recognise and follow. Its strongest point is the distinction between familiar line wins and a separate jackpot event. A reader can understand the ordinary symbols without mastering a changing grid or several collection meters.
The trade-off is that the jackpot artwork can dominate attention. An ordinary session still consists largely of reel results, and the top pool is not a reward for completing a personal progress bar. We would assess whether that basic game is enjoyable within a chosen budget, rather than play only for a remote headline outcome.
This is a review of published information, not a claim of personal cash play or withdrawal testing. The Microgaming guide provides background on the older provider name, while our games hub compares other formats.
Reels, paylines and the two special symbols
Normal line wins run from the leftmost reel through adjacent positions on an enabled payline. Matching animals placed in unrelated positions are not automatically one paying combination. Open the line diagram and paytable to identify the required path and symbol count.
A reference describing 25 lines does not tell you that every historical interface has identical controls. The detailed classic rules include line and coin selections, while some modern descriptions present a fixed-line total stake. Read the cash amount beside your spin control rather than copying settings from an older screenshot.
The lion Wild doubles the combination it completes
Virgin Games’ original-game rules explain that a lion used as a Wild doubles the payout of the combination it completes. The lion does not substitute for the monkey Scatter. Its own lion-only combination has a separate paytable award and does not receive that same Wild doubling automatically.
For an arithmetic example, an eligible normal line award of $0.40 becomes $0.80 when the doubling rule applies. The example does not describe a particular symbol payout or a measured result. Use the normal award shown for your stake before applying a feature factor.
The monkey Scatter pays differently
A scatter award is evaluated separately from an ordinary line win. The monkey does not need to follow a payline, and the detailed classic rules distinguish a scatter payment from the three-symbol threshold that starts Free Spins.
That means “a Scatter paid” and “the feature triggered” are different statements. Read the count and its paytable row rather than assuming every appearance of a special symbol launches a bonus. A Wild that fills an ordinary animal combination cannot be substituted into the monkey trigger.
Coins, credits and cash
Paytables in older clients can display coins. Convert those using the selected denomination and the relevant coin or line basis. A number such as 100 coins does not establish a $100 award without that conversion.
For illustration, 100 coins at a one-cent denomination equal $1; at five cents they equal $5. Neither example establishes the available stake range in a NZ account. Our NZD casino guide also explains why the account currency matters.
A paytable amount such as “75,000 coins” should not be treated as the maximum of the whole progressive game. A normal-symbol paytable award, a feature total and a network jackpot are different categories. A large coin count alone does not settle which category is being described.
Free Spins and the 3x multiplier
The detailed classic rules describe three or more Scatters awarding 15 Free Spins, with wins tripled. The feature uses the qualifying stake settings rather than a new cash wager for each awarded spin.
A tripling factor changes an eligible award; it does not make every Free Spin pay. Suppose an imaginary $0.50 regular award is assessed at 3x: the result is $1.50. Where the lion’s doubling and feature tripling both apply, follow the help panel’s calculation rather than multiplying an already-final display a second time.
| Event | Referenced rule |
|---|---|
| 3 or more monkey Scatters | 15 Free Spins. |
| Regular feature win | The applicable win is tripled. |
| Further qualifying trigger | Free Spins can be reactivated. |
| Jackpot wheel during Free Spins | Not activated in the detailed original-game rules. |
| Both features qualify together | The referenced sequence runs the wheel first, then Free Spins. |
The jackpot wheel is a separate feature
Grosvenor’s detailed rules, also corroborated by Virgin Games, state that the original progressive bonus cannot activate during Free Spins. If the base result qualifies for both, the jackpot feature runs first and the Free Spins follow.
The sequence matters when following a round history. It is also a reason to identify the exact title: another Mega Moolah network game can have a different feature sequence.
An award is not automatically session profit
Imagine spending $20 over a session and then receiving an $8 feature return. The $8 is an award, but it does not turn the session into an $8 profit. Include the amounts spent before reaching the feature when judging the result.
A retrigger is possible, not promised. Do not extend a paid session because the last set of spins ended without one. Casino promotional spins are separate again: a welcome offer may specify another title, an expiry and wagering conditions.
Mini, Minor, Major and Mega jackpots
The original jackpot feature awards one of four progressive tiers. They are named Mini, Minor, Major and Mega. A triggered wheel is not a promise of the largest tier, and it does not pay all four pools together.
Wildz’s game reference describes a networked system funded by a share of wagers. A network pool is different from a fixed multiplier such as 100x the stake. Its displayed cash value can change while people at multiple participating operators play.
Read the value in the actual client
Check the current meter, its currency and the rules attached to the game you loaded. A cached figure on a review page might be hours or days old. A historical jackpot screenshot is evidence of that display at that time, not the amount available now.
The detailed original rules specify that the server’s jackpot value is used when an award is paid and that a won pool resets to a fixed starting value. We do not copy overseas seed amounts into a promise of an identical NZ-dollar minimum.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Complete game title | A shared network name does not identify identical reel rules. |
| Live pool and currency | A review screenshot is not a current NZD meter. |
| Qualifying stake rules | Eligibility should come from the exact game’s help. |
| Account conditions | Verification and the operator’s payout process still need checking. |
No countdown to a personal jackpot
A larger pool does not reveal when your account will trigger the wheel. It is not a collection pot that must be completed by the next deposit. Nor does a run of losing reel results mean that a jackpot is owed to balance the session.
We do not publish a fabricated live meter, a guaranteed trigger frequency or anonymous NZ winners as evidence of availability. A historic payout does not establish a current record without a current source. We do not present an old winner as proof of the largest payout available today.
Our progressive jackpot guide and casino jackpot guide explain the wider categories. Neither a jackpot label nor the size of its artwork replaces the exact award and eligibility rules.
RTP references and the jackpot component
The published operator figures are not consistent: Grosvenor lists 88.12%, while Wildz lists 93.42%. We have not verified the configuration or reporting basis inside a particular New Zealand account. These references should not be combined as though they were interchangeable measurements of one tested client.
| Source | How to read the figure |
|---|---|
| Grosvenor | Lists 88.12% on its classic game-rules page. |
| Wildz | Lists 93.42% in its Mega Moolah reference. |
| Your loaded version | Check its RTP, jackpot component and applicable conditions. |
Progressive-game information can distinguish ordinary-game return from a jackpot component. Read whether the quoted figure is a base value or an overall figure. Adding a jackpot percentage again to an already-inclusive total would count the same contribution twice.
The UK Gambling Commission’s RTP explanation describes the long-run concept. RTP does not promise a particular return from a deposit or a short session. A figure that includes rare jackpots also does not imply that ordinary reel wins will return that percentage during an evening.
As a mathematical illustration only, an overall RTP of 95% corresponds to a 5% theoretical edge and a long-run average loss of $5 per $100 staked. This is not an assertion that Mega Moolah runs at 95%. A specific session can finish far from a theoretical average.
Stakes and the maximum-bet claim
Betting as much as possible is not a substitute for choosing a spending limit and checking the exact eligibility rules. A larger stake increases the cost of an unsuccessful round and does not guarantee the wheel or its top tier.
Read how the actual game relates stake to participation and prizes. We do not promise identical jackpot odds at every stake, or suggest that changing stakes after losses is a reliable way to force a feature. Choose an affordable amount independently of a jackpot headline.
For a simple spending comparison, 100 paid spins at $0.25 create $25 of turnover; at $2.50 they create $250. The examples do not certify either setting in your account. Re-wagering returned money also adds to total stakes.
Volatility labels need context
A broad volatility label describes ordinary play differently from the chance of landing a large progressive prize. Those are separate distributions, and neither has been measured here in a New Zealand account.
Keep the reel game and jackpot layer separate when reading those descriptions. “Low volatility” is not a promise of low losses, a frequent Mega award or a safe way to earn income. The minimum-deposit guide covers funding thresholds, which are another separate measure.
Other editions, demos and mobile play
Several titles carry the Mega Moolah network name. For example, Fortunium Gold Mega Moolah has its own mystery-reel and jackpot-trigger structure. Those rules should not be imported into the original safari game.
Check the full title and help panel whenever a lobby offers more than one network game. For a different jackpot format, our Cash ’N Riches Megaways review explains fixed prizes; Gates of Olympus illustrates why a maximum-round cap is different from a progressive pool.
A demonstration, where offered, can help with the interface. It does not establish real-money eligibility or award a withdrawable network jackpot. We have not verified a current official NZ demo here. Our free pokies guide explains virtual credits and promotional spins.
On a phone or tablet
Make sure the total stake, paytable and jackpot currency remain readable. Our Android, iPhone, iPad and mobile guides cover device questions. We do not claim compatibility with every older phone or a separate official app at every casino.
If a connection fails, retain the round reference and check the account history with verified support. A frozen wheel animation does not establish a paid jackpot. Starting another wager is not a way to resolve uncertainty about a previous result.

A casino welcome offer is separate from the game’s own jackpot eligibility rules.
Check whether progressive titles are allowed under an optional promotion, how they contribute to wagering, and whether any promotional stake or withdrawal limits apply. A provider logo alone does not establish that every game is present or promotion-eligible.
The casino reviews, bonus guide and payment-method guide cover those account questions. Old placement at a retired casino is not current proof of NZ availability.
Set the stopping point before playing
Choose an affordable entertainment amount and a time limit. Keep essential expenses separate and stop when the chosen limit is reached, even if the pool has grown or a previous feature disappointed you. A jackpot is not a plan for recovering losses.
If stopping becomes difficult, use breaks, account restrictions or self-exclusion where appropriate. Our Responsible Gambling page points to independent New Zealand support.
Mega Moolah FAQs
Which Mega Moolah game does this review cover?
This page covers the original safari-themed Mega Moolah, with five reels and 25 paylines. Other games carrying the Mega Moolah network name can have different reel layouts, features and trigger rules.
What are the four Mega Moolah jackpots?
The tiers are Mini, Minor, Major and Mega. They are progressive pools rather than four fixed NZ-dollar prizes. Read the live values and currency in the game; a triggered wheel awards one tier, not all four.
How do the lion Wild and monkey Scatter work?
The lion substitutes for ordinary symbols and doubles a combination it completes as a Wild. It does not replace the monkey Scatter. The monkey pays independently of paylines and three or more trigger the Free Spins feature.
How many Free Spins are awarded?
The referenced original rules award 15 Free Spins for three or more monkey Scatters, with regular and Wild-assisted wins tripled. The triggering bet settings carry into the feature, and Free Spins can be reactivated.
Can the original jackpot wheel trigger during Free Spins?
The detailed Grosvenor and Virgin Games rules say it cannot. If a base-game result qualifies for both features, Grosvenor’s reference runs the jackpot feature first and then Free Spins. Do not apply this rule automatically to other network titles.
Is Mega Moolah’s RTP 88.12% or 93.42%?
Grosvenor publishes 88.12%, while Wildz publishes 93.42% for its listing. We have not verified the setting or reporting basis for a particular NZ account. Read the loaded game’s help and whether its figure includes the jackpot return.
Does betting maximum guarantee a jackpot?
No. A higher stake increases spending and does not guarantee the wheel or the Mega tier. Read the exact game’s stake and eligibility rules; do not treat a maximum-bet control as a winning strategy.
Is Mega Moolah confirmed at the four featured casinos?
No. The table contains general offers and does not establish that Mega Moolah or its progressive network is available in every featured New Zealand lobby. Check the title, jackpot connection and account eligibility before depositing for it.
