Gonzo’s Quest review for NZ players
Gonzo’s Quest turns a familiar five-reel pokie into a chain of falling stone blocks. Winning symbols break apart, replacements drop in and the Avalanche multiplier can climb before the round ends. Free Falls uses the same idea with a higher multiplier ladder.
This guide explains the original NetEnt game, its line-based feature trigger and the difference from Gonzo’s Quest Megaways. It also separates published figures from what has actually been verified for a New Zealand account.
The original Gonzo’s Quest at a glance
NetEnt’s product page identifies a 5×3 grid, 20 paylines and the Avalanche and Free Fall features. Those details identify the original game more reliably than a thumbnail showing the explorer alone.

| Detail | What it means |
|---|---|
| Studio | NetEnt. |
| Layout | Five reels, three rows and 20 fixed paylines. |
| Main mechanic | Avalanche wins can continue within one paid round. |
| Base multiplier ceiling | 5x on the Avalanche ladder. |
| Free Falls ceiling | 15x on the feature ladder. |
| Published RTP | 95.97% on NetEnt’s listing; check the loaded version. |
| NZ availability | Not verified at every casino in this page’s table. |
Our assessment of the format
The appeal is easy to follow: each successful stage can keep a round moving and change the multiplier for the next stage. The game offers something to watch between the initial result and the final balance, without requiring a variable-ways counter or several separate collection meters.
The trade-off is that a lively round can look more rewarding than it is. A sequence of small wins is still small, and an impressive multiplier only changes the eligible award beneath it. We would judge a completed result by the total stake and return, rather than the number of explosions.
The jungle and temple setting is fantasy entertainment, not a history lesson or evidence about the game’s probabilities. This review uses published rules rather than claiming a personal cash-play test. Our Best Pokies Games guide compares other formats and the NetEnt guide covers the studio.
How Avalanche works
EnergyCasino’s rule summary describes winning blocks breaking away, replacements falling in and further wins continuing the round. Each successful continuation advances a ladder; when no new winning combination forms, that chain ends.
Avalanches within the paid round do not each require another press of the bet button. Distinguish the animation’s several stages from starting a fresh wager. This is particularly useful when checking how a round total was assembled.
| Stage in chain | Base game | Free Falls |
|---|---|---|
| First win | 1x | 3x |
| Second win | 2x | 6x |
| Third win | 3x | 9x |
| Fourth and later | 5x | 15x |
The base ladder skips from 3x to 5x. There is no separate 4x stage in this reference. The multiplier does not increase forever or become a permanent benefit carried through every future paid spin.
A worked example of one round
Imagine three successive stages, each with a normal award of $0.20 before the Avalanche multiplier. At 1x, 2x and 3x, the awards would be $0.20, $0.40 and $0.60. Together they make $1.20. This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a recorded result or a prediction of a typical spin.
If the display already reports $1.20 as the completed round total, do not multiply that whole amount by 3 again. Each stage has already received its applicable factor. Equally, a meter showing $0.20, then $0.60, then $1.20 may be cumulative rather than three additional amounts.
In Free Falls, the same hypothetical pre-multiplier awards would produce $0.60, $1.20 and $1.80 at the first three stages, totalling $3.60. The higher ladder changes those awards; it does not make every feature spin a winning spin.
Resetting the ladder
Follow the end of the connected chain. Once it ends without another win, the next ordinary paid round starts at the base level. Within Free Falls, use the feature’s starting level for the next chain rather than treating a previously reached 15x as permanently locked in.
Pausing between wagers or changing the sound does not give control over which symbols fall next. Nor does watching several unproductive rounds establish that a longer Avalanche is owed. The progress bar describes the current sequence, not an account’s progress towards a guaranteed win.
Free Falls: the trigger is on a payline
The detailed original-game rules specifies three Free Fall symbols in succession from the leftmost reel on a paying line, awarding 10 Free Falls. The relevant positions are reels 1, 2 and 3. Three symbols scattered across unrelated positions are not the same qualifying combination.
This is worth checking even if you know other games with scatter bonuses. The word “scatter” is often used loosely in reviews; it does not mean that every game accepts three symbols anywhere. Read the original game’s line rule rather than borrowing a trigger from another title.
The Wild can help complete the feature
The detailed MonacoBet rules describe Wilds substituting for other symbols, including Free Fall symbols. They place Wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4. This special substitution is also described in the official studio material.
A Wild on the second reel can therefore matter when checking a potential qualifying line across the first three reels. It does not remove the line requirement or allow any collection of symbols elsewhere on the screen to trigger the feature.
Retriggers and returning to the main game
The same detailed reference gives 10 additional Free Falls for another qualifying trigger during the feature. It also explains that, after the feature, play returns to the point where it was activated and continues under the Avalanche rules. Check your version’s help when following a complicated round history.
A feature award should be considered alongside the money spent before reaching it. If a session has lost $12 and Free Falls returns $5, the $5 is a return within that session, not proof of a $5 overall profit. The useful comparison is with the session’s net cost, not just the feature’s highlighted total.
Casino promotional spins are another separate arrangement. They may be restricted to a particular title, have an expiry or impose wagering conditions. A general welcome offer does not establish that it grants Free Falls inside Gonzo’s Quest.
Symbols, paylines and the stake behind a payout
The original uses regular carved stone symbols, a question-mark Wild and a gold Free Fall symbol. For normal line wins, match the required symbols consecutively from the left, following one of the 20 active paths. The paytable identifies the award for the symbol and matching length.
| Symbol group | Role in the original game |
|---|---|
| Regular stones | Different symbols have different line-pay values for qualifying matches. |
| Question-mark Wild | Substitutes to help complete combinations, including the Free Fall trigger. |
| Gold Free Fall | A qualifying line across the first three reels awards the feature. |
Do not count every matching stone on the screen as one pays-anywhere group. Five matching pictures in disconnected positions can fail to form the required line. Conversely, several separate paylines can contribute to a result even though they pass through some of the same visible positions.
Line bet is different from total bet
In a traditional coin-and-level interface, total bet depends on the number of active lines, coin value and level. With 20 lines, a one-cent coin and level one, the illustrative total is 20 × $0.01 × 1 = $0.20. At level two with that same coin, it becomes $0.40.
A paytable figure expressed in line-bet units must be applied to its line basis. It should not automatically be multiplied by the entire 20-line stake. Modern interfaces may display amounts directly, so read the label rather than assuming all clients present the same units.
For example, if a hypothetical line bet is one cent and a qualifying symbol combination pays 50 times line bet, that line award is 50 cents before any applicable multiplier. Treating “50” as 50 times a 20-cent total stake would instead produce $10 and overstate the example twentyfold.
Read the table in the loaded game
Before using a symbol-payment table, check whether its numbers are coins, multiples of line bet or cash amounts at the selected stake. The paytable in the loaded game is the reference for that version; a bare number copied from another screen can lose its meaning.
Changing the stake can change both potential cash returns and the cash lost on an unsuccessful round. It does not turn a payment limit into a likely outcome. Keep the normal-symbol award, Avalanche factor, total round return and net session position as separate figures.
RTP, volatility and maximum-win references
NetEnt publishes 95.97% RTP. The mathematical complement is a 4.03% theoretical house edge. At $100 of accumulated stakes, that corresponds to a long-run average loss of $4.03, not a promise that a particular $100 deposit will finish at $95.97.
The UK Gambling Commission’s RTP guide explains the long-run concept. It is included as a mathematical reference, not a statement about New Zealand permission to operate. Re-wagering returned funds also adds to total stakes; turnover and your initial deposit are different amounts.
Why the maximum needs qualification
The current NetEnt page lists 2,200x bet, while the official Evolution showcase lists 2,500x. The published references disagree. We have not established a reason for that difference or verified which ceiling a particular NZ account uses.
| Official reference | Listed maximum |
|---|---|
| Current NetEnt product page | 2,200x bet. |
| Evolution game showcase | 2,500x original bet. |
| Practical check | Read the exact client’s rules and any additional operator limit. |
Neither listing establishes one fixed NZD cash maximum for every account. Currency, permitted stake, calculation basis and account limits need checking. A possible maximum is also very different from an average win or a progressive jackpot that grows over time.
Volatility does not provide a schedule
Evolution describes the game as medium/high volatility, while operator summaries use related labels. These broad categories describe uneven outcomes; they do not tell you when a feature is due or how much the next hundred rounds will return.
We do not invent a feature frequency, simulate a handful of spins and call it a measured NZ return, or translate a headline hit rate into guaranteed profit. A paying result can still be smaller than the stake, so “a win occurred” and “the round made money” are not equivalent claims.
Check currency and total cost
We have not verified a universal NZ minimum stake for every version. Read the selected cash amount in the loaded game instead of copying an overseas euro or pound range. Confirm the account currency too; a dollar sign alone does not prove it is NZD.
Our NZD casino guide and minimum-deposit guide cover funding questions. A low deposit threshold does not dictate a sensible spin size. A hundred paid 20-cent rounds generate $20 in turnover; at $1, the same count generates $100.
Original Gonzo’s Quest versus Megaways
Gonzo’s Quest Megaways is a separate Red Tiger release. Its official Evolution product page describes Megaways and Unbreakable Wilds. Those features should not be imported into this original-game review.
Check the complete lobby title before comparing rules. A sequel or remake can retain Gonzo, falling stones and familiar words while changing how combinations form. A shared character is not enough to assume the same payout table or feature structure.
The Megaways hub explains that broader system. For another fixed-grid tumble format, compare Gates of Olympus, whose pays-anywhere counts and orb multipliers work differently. Cash ’N Riches Megaways provides another ways-based comparison.
Demo play, phones and round history
The official Evolution showcase provides a demo starting point where available. Virtual credits can help you follow the line highlights and multiplier reset without treating an example return as cash. A demo win cannot be withdrawn or used to predict a later cash session.
On a small screen, check that the stake and multiplier bar are readable before touching a betting control. Find the information panel, open the line diagram and confirm you can return to the game without changing the chosen amount accidentally.
Our Android, iPhone, iPad and mobile guides cover device questions. We have not tested every browser, older phone or casino app. Our free pokies guide explains demonstration credits and promotional spins.
After a connection interruption, keep the round reference and check the account history with verified support. A frozen stone animation does not establish whether a result completed. Starting another wager is not a way to resolve uncertainty about the previous one.

A casino’s promotional spins are separate from the game’s Free Falls feature.
Ripper offer clarification: its general coupon rules state a maximum qualifying deposit of $200 unless a promotion overrides it. The NZ headline offer does not clearly resolve that ceiling. Confirm how much of your deposit qualifies before using KIWIJACKPOT.
Confirm eligible titles, wagering contribution, promotional stake limits and expiry before accepting an optional offer. A NetEnt supplier logo does not prove that every NetEnt game is present or eligible for a specific promotion.
The casino reviews, bonus guide and payment-method guide cover account-level questions. Funding, game rules and withdrawal conditions should each be checked on their own terms.
Keep the session within a chosen limit
Set an affordable entertainment amount and a stopping time before starting. Do not increase the stake because the last chain stopped at 3x or a feature has not appeared. The urge to recover earlier losses is a reason to step away, not a betting signal.
Use account limits, time-outs or self-exclusion if you need help stopping. Our Responsible Gambling page points to independent New Zealand support.
Gonzo’s Quest FAQs
How do winning combinations work in Gonzo’s Quest?
The original has a five-reel, three-row grid and 20 fixed paylines. Matching normal symbols must follow an active line in succession from the leftmost reel. This is different from a pays-anywhere or Megaways game.
What are the Avalanche multipliers?
The base-game ladder is 1x, 2x, 3x and then 5x for the fourth and later consecutive winning stages. Free Falls uses 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x. The ladder concerns a connected Avalanche chain, not a permanent account multiplier.
How do you trigger the Free Falls feature?
A qualifying line of Free Fall symbols across reels 1, 2 and 3 starts 10 Free Falls. The Wild can substitute for the Free Fall symbol. The symbols do not simply trigger from any three positions on the grid.
Can Free Falls retrigger?
Yes. The detailed MonacoBet rules award 10 additional Free Falls for another qualifying trigger during the feature. Read the rules in the exact version you load before relying on a retrigger amount.
What RTP does Gonzo’s Quest have?
NetEnt lists 95.97%. That is a published reference, not a guaranteed return from your deposit or a measurement of your next session. Check the loaded game’s help for the applicable setting.
Is the maximum win 2,200x or 2,500x?
The current NetEnt product page lists 2,200x bet, while Evolution’s separate official showcase lists 2,500x. The published sources disagree. Confirm the exact game’s help and operator limits instead of relying on one universal cash maximum.
Is Gonzo’s Quest Megaways the same game?
No. The original NetEnt game uses a fixed 5×3 grid and 20 paylines. Gonzo’s Quest Megaways is a separate Red Tiger release with a different reel and winning-ways system. Check the complete title before applying either set of rules.
Is the original game confirmed at all four featured casinos?
No. The comparison contains general casino offers and does not verify Gonzo’s Quest in every New Zealand lobby. Confirm the original title, account eligibility and current availability before depositing specifically for it.
