Land-based casinos in New Zealand: venues, entry and visit planning

New Zealand’s current casino venue list covers Auckland, Hamilton, Queenstown, Christchurch and Dunedin. This guide brings together their locations, entry requirements and practical visitor checks, including the difference between a casino and a local pub with pokies.

Start with the venue that fits your trip, then check its official opening hours, accepted identification and player-card requirements. Casino gambling areas are restricted to people aged 20 or older; a familiar brand name or a map listing does not replace those entry checks.

The current New Zealand casino list

The Gambling Commission’s casino licence-conditions page lists five venues. Three operate under SkyCity branding; the others are Christchurch Casino and Dunedin Casino, now trading as Grand Casino. The table below is a location comparison, not a ranking based on gambling returns or a claim that we have personally visited each property.

Addresses, phone numbers, schedules and floor figures were checked against the official venue pages linked below on 29 October 2026. Times are New Zealand local time; an early-morning closing time is on the following day. Machine and table totals describe the published floor, not how many games will be operating when you arrive. A casino’s building hours, individual table sessions and restaurant opening times can differ. Confirm the specific service you need before making a special journey.

Why older lists include Wharf Casino

SkyCity’s corporate licence table identifies Queenstown’s former Wharf Casino as closed and records its licence surrender on 28 March 2024. It should not be presented as an additional operating casino or described as merely awaiting its next opening announcement.

The current SkyCity Queenstown venue on Beach Street is a separate listing. An old photo, review or saved map pin for Wharf Casino is not a reliable destination for today’s visit.

“Pokies near me” can mean a different venue type

A nearby search may return a casino, a pub, a club or a hotel with gaming machines. A familiar pokie title does not make all of those properties casinos. Check the venue name and category before assuming it offers live tables, a full casino floor or the same entry arrangements.

This page is a national casino guide rather than a live location finder. Use the verified address to assess your journey, and check opening information with the venue instead of relying entirely on a map’s “open now” label.

What distinguishes the five venues?

SkyCity Auckland

SkyCity Auckland’s casino page places the venue in central Auckland and publishes a substantial mix of gaming machines and table games. It also links to its poker room, dining and entertainment information. Those services have their own arrangements; do not assume every table or outlet runs throughout the casino’s opening hours.

Its published casino schedule is 24 hours, excluding Christmas Day, Good Friday and 3am–1pm on Anzac Day. A SHOW by SkyCity card is required to play. Check identification requirements before arriving, including if you already have a saved card or account.

For more venue-specific context, see our SkyCity Auckland guide. Casino admission and access to the Sky Tower or other attractions are separate questions; a ticket for one experience should not be treated as permission for another.

SkyCity Hamilton

The Hamilton casino page gives the Victoria Street address and describes gaming machines, table games and hospitality. It publishes 10am–4am Monday–Thursday, with final entry at 3.20am, and describes continuous weekend opening from 10am Friday to 4am Monday. Holiday exceptions still apply.

Hamilton also publishes mandatory carded play, naming SHOW by SkyCity or a valid Premier Rewards card. If you are travelling specifically for a table game, ask about that table’s session, minimum stake and current availability rather than inferring it from the venue’s overall opening time.

SkyCity Queenstown

SkyCity Queenstown is at Level 2 of Stratton House on Beach Street. Its current casino page lists gaming machines and table games, including blackjack, roulette and baccarat, and requires a player card to play.

The venue publishes later closing on Friday and Saturday than on other nights, with holiday exceptions. Use its visit-planning page for the current entry and identification information. Ask about accessible entry or any specific assistance before travelling if that affects your plans.

Christchurch Casino

Christchurch Casino combines machines, table games and poker with restaurants, bars and entertainment at its Victoria Street property. Its published regular hours are shorter Sunday–Thursday than Friday–Saturday.

The venue’s FAQ states that under-20s are not permitted anywhere inside its premises, including the restaurants and bars. That is important when planning a group meal: do not assume a non-gambling visit removes the age restriction.

Our Christchurch guide is the related local page. Check the official FAQ for accepted ID, current parking access and dress standards; a previously used car park may not be available on your next visit.

Grand Casino, Dunedin

The Grand Casino is the Dunedin venue in the Southern Cross hotel building. Its website lists electronic gaming machines and games including blackjack, roulette, baccarat and Caribbean Stud Poker. Use Grand Casino when checking the current official website, while recognising Dunedin Casino in licence records and older references.

The contact page gives 118 High Street and an opening time of noon, with Christmas Day and Good Friday closures. Its FAQ says the 20+ rule also applies to the Grand Bar & Restaurant and distinguishes gaming payments from restaurant payments.

See our Dunedin casino guide for the related local page. Do not infer a casino’s opening year from the age of the building that houses it.

Age, identification, dress and player cards

DIA’s casino guidance states that patrons must be 20 to enter a casino. A different age rule for another gambling activity, or an online website’s 18+ label, does not change the casino requirement.

Carry current identification accepted by the particular venue. A passport and a local driver licence may be treated differently from a membership card, an overseas document or a photo stored on a phone. Check the published list and ask the venue if your document is not clearly covered.

Entry checks and membership checks can differ

Proof of age at the door is not necessarily everything needed to obtain a player card or complete another identity check. If you intend to register, establish whether additional identification or address evidence is required before making the trip.

The three SkyCity casino pages publish card requirements for play. Their current wording should replace old advice that membership is always optional. For other venues, read their own current rules rather than applying the SkyCity policy across the country.

Dress for the actual venue

Check the casino’s own dress policy instead of relying on a broad “anything goes” or “formal dress only” claim. Neat, tidy clothing is a useful starting point, but the venue may specify exclusions or retain discretion at entry.

Consider the whole group when planning a restaurant, bar or casino visit. An under-age companion, unsuitable ID or an existing exclusion can affect access regardless of a booking. Resolve those questions before organising transport.

Respect privacy during registration

Provide identity documents only through the genuine venue process. This website does not issue casino memberships or need copies of your passport. Ask the operator how it handles verification information if you have questions about its collection or use.

Games, table limits and the cost of a visit

Compare what you want to do rather than choosing solely by the size of a casino floor. A larger machine count does not guarantee a particular game, lower stakes or better results. An advertised table-game range also does not mean every table is staffed at all times.

Pokies and electronic games

Before inserting money, find the total stake per spin, paytable and any extra-cost feature. A denomination label is not always the complete price of a round. Ask staff if the machine’s controls or credit display are unclear.

A game can have different versions, rules or configurations across venues and online platforms. Our pokie game guides, including Big Red and Queen of the Nile, explain individual titles. Their inclusion here does not promise availability on any of the five casino floors.

Live tables and displayed limits

Read the table’s minimum, maximum and game rules before joining. Side bets have separate prices and payouts. Ask the dealer when to place a bet and how the table handles chips if you are unfamiliar with the procedure.

A casino’s broad game list is not a reliable source for tonight’s cheapest table. Limits and operating sessions can change. If a specific game is the purpose of your trip, contact the venue rather than treating an old “from $5” article as a current quote.

Budget for more than gambling

Include transport, parking, food and any accommodation in the outing’s cost. Keep an affordable gambling limit separate, and do not count an uncertain prize as money available for the return journey.

For a hypothetical example, a NZ$120 evening budget might reserve NZ$30 for transport and NZ$40 for a meal, leaving at most NZ$50 for other entertainment. That is an illustration of separating costs, not a recommended gambling amount or a venue price quote.

Payments, cash-out and rewards

Check permitted funding methods and the cash-out procedure with the venue. Grand Casino’s FAQ, for example, explicitly excludes credit-card transactions for gaming while accepting credit cards in its restaurant. A payment accepted at the bar is not proof that it can fund play.

A player-card balance, reward points and cash have different conditions. Ask what can be redeemed, where, and with what identification. A dining discount or reward does not offset losses automatically, and it is not a reason to increase spending.

Planning a visit that fits your day

Confirm the venue and service you need before arranging a special trip. A casino may be open while a restaurant is closed, a poker session is full or a particular table is unavailable. Check the activity rather than only the building’s opening hours.

  1. Destination: verify the exact property and current address.
  2. Timing: check casino hours, holiday exceptions and any separate game session.
  3. Access: establish age, ID, dress and player-card requirements.
  4. Travel: plan arrival, parking or public transport and a reliable return route.
  5. Budget: separate food and travel costs from money you can afford to lose.
  6. Assistance: ask about accessibility, group arrangements or other specific needs beforehand.

Do not assume parking is free because a review once mentioned a player benefit. Read the current parking conditions, entry and exit times, and any validation requirement. The same principle applies to dining offers and event tickets.

Restaurants and entertainment

Look at the individual outlet’s current menu, opening hours and booking policy. A casino resort can contain several businesses or attractions with different access arrangements. Check age restrictions especially carefully when an activity is within the licensed casino premises.

An advertised show, sports screening or special function may have separate availability. If that is the main reason for travelling, verify the event directly. Gambling need not be added to the visit simply because a casino is nearby.

Access requirements

Ask the venue about the entrance, lift, seating or facilities you need rather than inferring accessibility from a street photograph. Tell staff what assistance would make the visit workable, without sending unnecessary private medical details to an unrelated review website.

Keep travel arrangements independent of gambling results. If you drink, use an appropriate transport option and follow the venue’s conduct rules. Leaving at the planned time is easier when the journey home is already arranged.

Taking breaks and dealing with a problem

Decide when to stop before beginning play. A recent loss, loyalty target or nearby cash machine is not a reason to extend a session. Ask the venue’s host-responsibility team about breaks, limits or exclusion if you want help changing your access.

Our Responsible Gambling page links to independent support. A casino card does not make gambling risk-free, and stopping a marketing email is not the same as arranging an exclusion.

A disputed game or payment

Ask a floor supervisor or duty manager to record the problem. Keep the game or machine reference, approximate time, amount and relevant receipt. Avoid continuing to play merely to test whether the issue repeats.

DIA’s casino Gambling Inspector guidance covers complaints about the conduct of gambling, equipment integrity and related casino operations. Ask for the appropriate inspector contact where needed. A dining, parking or accommodation dispute may follow a different route.

Describe what happened and what resolution you are seeking. Keep copies of written responses and share private financial or identity records only through an appropriate verified process. We cannot adjudicate a casino game or release money held by a venue.

Researching online casinos is a separate comparison

The physical venues above should not be confused with the online brands reviewed elsewhere on this website. Their memberships, balances, licensing and offers are not interchangeable. The online table below is separate from the five-venue directory and does not describe bonuses at SkyCity, Christchurch or Grand Casino.

We may receive commission through these online links. Read our Affiliate Disclosure and review directory. A listing is not evidence of an issued New Zealand online casino licence or a completed payout.

Ripper online offer limit: its general rules state a maximum qualifying deposit of $200 unless an offer says otherwise. At 250%, that would produce a $500 bonus; the $2,500 headline does not itself resolve the difference. Confirm an express override in the active online offer terms before relying on the maximum. This concerns the separate online comparison, not the physical venues.

For online research, our payment guide, NZD account guide and bonus conditions guide cover different questions from a physical visit. DIA’s online-player guidance describes the current transition, with licences expected from early 2027. Land-based venue licensing should not be presented as automatic authorisation for an online brand.

New Zealand land-based casino questions

How many land-based casinos are currently listed in New Zealand?

The Gambling Commission’s current casino licence-conditions page lists five venues: SkyCity Auckland, SkyCity Hamilton, SkyCity Queenstown, Christchurch Casino and Dunedin Casino, which trades as Grand Casino. SkyCity’s former Wharf Casino is closed; its venue licence was surrendered in March 2024.

Do I have to be 20 to enter a New Zealand casino?

Yes. The minimum age for casino gambling areas is 20. Bring identification accepted by the venue. Do not assume an 18+ rule for another gambling activity applies to a casino, or that an associated restaurant always admits younger guests.

Is Wharf Casino still open in Queenstown?

No. SkyCity identifies Wharf Casino as closed and records that its licence was surrendered on 28 March 2024. The current SkyCity Queenstown casino is at Level 2, Stratton House, 16–24 Beach Street. Treat these as different venue records.

Do I need a player card at SkyCity?

SkyCity’s current Auckland, Hamilton and Queenstown casino pages require a SHOW by SkyCity card to play; Hamilton and Queenstown also mention valid Premier Rewards cards. Check the current card and identification requirements before visiting. Do not assume an anonymous cash-only visit is available.

Are all New Zealand casinos open 24 hours?

No. Auckland publishes 24-hour casino operation with specified holiday exceptions, while the other venues publish different schedules. Casino, restaurant and table-game hours can also differ within one property. Check the official venue page for the date and activity you are planning.

Does a pokies venue near me always mean a licensed casino?

No. Search results can include a pub, club or other gaming-machine venue as well as a casino. These are different venue types. Identify the exact property and its licence category rather than assuming that every pokies listing offers a casino floor and live table games.

Can I use a credit card to gamble at every venue?

Do not assume so. Grand Casino’s FAQ explicitly says it does not accept credit-card transactions for gaming, although its restaurant accepts credit cards. Ask the specific venue about permitted payment and cash-out methods, charges and identification requirements.

Who can help with a disputed casino game?

Ask the venue’s floor supervisor or duty manager to record the issue, including the game, approximate time and any receipt or machine reference. DIA casino Gambling Inspectors can investigate complaints about the conduct of casino gambling. A restaurant or parking complaint may require a different process.

How this guide was checked

We checked the Gambling Commission’s venue list, DIA guidance and the linked official casino visitor pages. This is a researched guide, not a claim of personal visits or gambling returns. Schedules and entry policies can change. Read our Editorial Policy or use Contact to report changed information with its current source.
